Even living in Texas, I knew relatively few people who were absolutely against the books aside from a few of my friends' parents. My parents loved them, most of my teachers enjoyed them and they were always made available in the school library

It's the whole 'vocal minority' thing, p. much. The people who think "everything is satanic" in some way will always scream the loudest, unfortunately.
