'Mary Sue' has pretty much lost all of its meaning in general these days. Especially when people hurl it around as a gender-specific insult towards female characters, canon or fan-made. That's what gets in my craw the most about the whole deal.

(Side tangent: I remember the days when if a female character -usually in anime/manga/JRPG fandoms- showed any sort of assertiveness or skill, they were instantly labelled either a 'bitch' or a 'Mary Sue'. Sometimes even both. Ughhhh...)
