The 'written off as whiny' thing ticks me off so bad. I'd heard for years before I watched 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom' that oooohhh you should skip that one, the female lead is SO annoying and useless and chickenshit. And then I watched it and she's screaming because of getting thrown out of a plane, and thrown into fire as a human sacrifice, and used in weird rituals...who WOULDN'T scream?? I would lose my shit, what are those viewers on??

They've gone so far into "this isn't real" territory that they can't empathize with characters who act realistically. Also, they think they'd be "different" if they were put in those situations (vast majority of them wouldn't act any different, of course. They'd piss their pants and hide in a corner).

Pretty sure a lot of it is people who want to watch characters overcome shit in a conventionally badass way, without any of the ugly parts. They wanna think that if they were in the situation, they'd be brave, and badass, and if they had any issues they'd be cool issues that just make you seem like even MORE of a badass (see: characters who just don't know how to let anyone in and HAVE to do it on their own, or who have anger issues that DON'T backfire horrifically).

Then a realistic portrayal of how actual people would actually act comes along, and it's terrifying because holy shit, the audience might have to acknowledge that it doesn't work that way, and it makes you confront the fact that you, too, have the potential for such horrific ugliness if things go tits up.

To keep this relevant to fandom, what I thought was really kickass was the deconstruction of the ~conventional fucked up badass~ trope in The Walking Dead in the form of Michonne, who was first introduced as a don't-need-no-one's-help who led walkers around on a leash. WOW, ISN'T THAT AWESOME? But then she herself admitted that it was really fucked up, and she had no shame in accepting that she couldn't do it alone, and even more importantly, that she didn't want to.

On yet another side note, something else that really gets my goat is when people see a male character go through realistic portrayals of grief or trauma or whatever and write it all off as manpain. Like. No?
