Yeah yeah, I see it now, sorry for being so dense, shutting up now.

I don't think you were being dense. Willow's mind-wipe wasn't as obviously abusive as what Spike and Warren did. It's only when you think through all the implications that you realize just how bad it was. (I'm sure Willow blithely avoided thinking about it - a perfect storm of mauvaise foi.) Whereas Tara would have been exquisitely sensitive to it, having previously been turned into a gibbering shell by Glory's magic AND, even earlier, having been manipulated into loathing her own nature by her family's lies.*

*(Although I've always wondered, why was Tara so sure she'd turn into a 'demon' upon reaching adulthood when her mother didn't?)

I got the impression that Tara's mom wasn't around anymore? I thought she told Buffy @ The Body that she'd lost her mom when she was little ... which I always headcanoned as possibly meaning that Mrs MacClay was around just long enough to bear Tara and Donnie; then, when Tara was old enough that she could could keep house for her father, Tara's mom was "handled."

My memory of her backstory was foggy, so I went off and looked at the Buffy wiki. It says she lost her mother at the age of 17, and that her dad had told her when she was little that her mother was of demonic descent.

In which case Tara's mom was well past turning-into-a-demon age at the time she died, which makes me wonder: what did Tara SEE when she looked at her mom? How did Tara think she herself would change when she turned 18? If her mother (who was past the turning-into-a-demon age) still looked and acted normal, and Tara was fully human on her father's side, what exactly did she think would happen?

I guess I'm saying the family story is riddled with huge gaping holes, and I wish Tara had realized that. (Not blaming her, mind you - she'd clearly been royally mindfucked by the entire clan.)

At some point after The Body, it's made clear that Tara's mother died. She's talking to Willow about Buffy, and Willow makes a comment to the effect of "Well, I'm sorry I can't be in your club because my mother's not dead," and it seemed like Tara was a teenager when it happened. Whether she believed that her mother had a demon in her or not was never addressed, although she certainly thought she herself did, or she wouldn't have tried to hide it from the Scoobies.
