Re: Being on Tumblr has made me less tolerant...

IDK, Tumblr helped me realized what a fucked up relationship I was in with my family. (As in: I was twelve and felt I had to take care of my able-bodied, able-minded parents instead of them taking care of me--I was the one doing all the chores, cooking meals, etc.) I grew up thinking this was the norm and not, you know, abusive. I've met a lot of people who had the same realization, and it's made me realize how fucked up most families are.

I think a lot of people have begun to realize just how fucked up standards are and thus a lot more people are visibly sharing their stories.

It's easy to be sympathetic when it seems it doesn't happen often. But then, when fucked up shit is happening everywhere, you can't plug your fingers in your ears and you have to tell yourself it's ~fake~ and ~they just want attention so they're lying~ because some part of you doesn't want to admit just how fucked up the world around you is.

Good for you, but it isn't the case for everyone. For example, I have been suicidally depressed for a good part of my young adulthood. As such, I was always deeply sympathetic when people shared their experience, even on the Internet. I felt like we were struggling, but struggling together to get better. Tumblr makes me feel like my illness is somehow coddled and fetishized. Enabled. So now I savior all depression posts. Not because they're triggering (I've never had such triggers) but because they make me annoyed, and that has nothing to do with my refusal to believe that mental is real. I know quite well.

I guess my experiences have been different. My depression, it felt less being coddled or fetishized and more... "It's okay to have these thoughts and they will get better at your own pace and you're not broken just because you have these thoughts."

Which is a hell of a lot better than I felt before due to my family situation that made me feel like I was an awful human being that liked being depressed because I wasn't getting better fast enough.

That hug box-style reassurance has always been anything but helpful to me, since in my episodes I already have the tendency to make excuses for myself. So yeah, simply put, the 'depression environment' on Tumblr isn't for me.

Sadly, Tumblr seems to coddle and fetishize most everything. I definitely see this mentality about pretty much everything on Tumblr.
