What is it exactly?

Re: Ello

(Anonymous) 2014-09-28 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Another social media site.

Re: Ello

(Anonymous) 2014-09-28 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, what's different about it?

Re: Ello

(Anonymous) 2014-09-28 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Its big selling points are that it has no ads, is free, and lets you opt out of information sharing.

Yeah. No ads for now.

Re: Ello

(Anonymous) 2014-09-28 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
well, at various points FB made the same claims, so ...

Can't find anything on how they make their money. Does anyone else know? I assume it's sketchy means unless they actually state what it is.

Nah. They don't need to make money yet. First you get the userbase. THEN you monetize it.

Re: Ello

(Anonymous) 2014-09-28 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
but there's basically no way to make money without either having ads, or selling user info

so, you know, they're going to have to do one of those things if they ever hope to monetize

They will monetize. Once they get the userbase. Then they'll go public, sell stocks, and then start monetizing.

I guess it just seems silly for their selling points to be free, no ads, and no user info tracking when at least one of those things is almost inevitably going to change

because those are the three ways you make money off shit on the internet

da It's more than likely going to be a freemium service. There'll be a premium account, like how LJ has paid accounts, that give its users more of the same. I don't know what limitations the free account has, but I bet it has some restrictions. So, they can still have their "free" benefit while also having a paid subscription.

But they say something about sharing stuff with google...

Re: Ello

(Anonymous) 2014-09-28 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It's stripped of personal data and you can opt out, if you're still uncomfortable with it.

Re: Ello

(Anonymous) 2014-09-28 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Go check it out, they have a whole about section and you can check out public profiles! But basically it's very minimalist, professes to be private and never have ads or sell or mine your account for data or any of the other things people are fed up with about facebook.

https://ello.co

It's a new social network site. It's still in beta and currently invite-only. Basically the newest challenge to facebook.
