Re: Ignore the fact it's Gawker it just got me thinking

The type of thinking the article portrays has made me feel like something is wrong with me or my way of thinking because I don't get harassed enough. I feel safe riding the subway... why? What's wrong with me? I've never been threatened by a man there? But of course I have. I just don't know it. I'm so brainwashed I can't recognize an attack when it happens to me.

I do get harassed, but there's only like 2 parts of town I would feel somewhat unsafe after dark.

And that sort of reminds me: I once had an SJW trying to convince me I was a rape victim because I occasionally have sex when somewhat drunk.

Yes! I have NEVER been harassed. And in college I lived in a shitty neighborhood and walked everywhere (I have no car). The closest I got to harassment was someone asking me if I had a dollar. I said no, and that was that.

I have never even been harassed online or in a video game. I played WoW for 6 years. I played a female toon and most people knew I was a female. I was a guild leader for over 200 members at one point. Not once was I ever harassed by a guy. I WAS harassed by a female player because I removed her from the guild after she repeatedly harassed (sometimes sexually) other male and female guild members.

I don't get out much or go out late at night, but I've never been street harrassed. Part of me wonders if it's because I'm irredeemably ugly or something, because it's painted as being a really common occurrence.

Yeah…I've never had street harassment happen to me. Ever. But then I'm ugly so maybe that's it. Hell, there are times when I wish it would happen because then at least I'd know that guys at least find me attractive enough to make a pass at. But then I feel bad because of all the women who have to deal with that shit all the time.

But it sucks to be completely ignored. It's very selfish and petty of me to think so, but sometimes I can't help but think that negative attention would be better than no attention. At least then I'd know that I'm *worth* noticing. Grass is always greener, I guess...

I don't know if this is much comfort, but the hype about harassment usually emphasizes that how attractive or not you are doesn't have any influence on how much it happens to you. "Ugly" women get harassed for being ugly, harassment is for making women uncomfortable, not complimenting them for their looks.

PWD are harassed because they are perceived (rightly or wrongly) by the perpetrators as weak. I don't have access to the stats right now, but I know the incidence of all forms of abuse against PWD of both genders, adults AND children, are much higher than they are for the able-bodied.

So, frex, when I get approached (always by sketch characters always with ulterior motives, whether it's to try and scam/rob me or try and put the make on me) I know it has zero to do with my (lack of) attractiveness and everything to do with the power advantage the predators THINK they have over me.

I'm with you. I use my superhero power of common sense, which tells me to stay away from places that are not safe. I have the power of the second amendment. I walk away from men who make me uncomfortable. It's almost like I have free will and control over my actions!

Seriously though, I'd imagine being so afraid must get exhausting.

I've been harassed on the subway and it didn't make me feel less safe riding the train than I did before. Mostly because I was never of the opinion that riding a speeding car full of strangers deep underground was ever particularly secure, so I wasn't shocked and dismayed when a few of those strangers turned out of be dickcheeses.

I've been harassed twice. Once, I was out walking and I got the whole "hey baby, need a ride?" thing, and the guy was persistent as fuck, but I just kept walking with my head up until he drove on.

The other time, I was at a concert and a guy grabbed my ass. I knew who'd done it, because he had a shit-eating grin on his face. So, I walked away, maneuvered my way through the crowd so that I wound up behind him without him knowing, and grabbed his ass right the fuck back.

I've only ever been threatened once, and that was by a man who thought I was a man (because it was dark and I'd deliberately dressed to look as male as possible, thinking I'd be safer). When he realised I was a woman, he apologised.

I get the sense that street harassment is way more common in some cities/areas than others.

I have been street harassed before...and was due to the neighborhood I used to live in. And...I was because I was a white, chubby girl living in a predominantly black neighborhood. I was always harassed by older, skeezy looking black men. I'm not joking and I'm not being racist, this is shit that happened to me. I was even forcefully groped by a younger black man who looked at me like I was fucking crazy when I started cussing him out and screaming at him for doing so. I told my mom about that one and she nearly flipped.

I've also been creeped on by white guys when I was in high school, one of who turned into a fucking bully when I refused to go out with him. Luckily I had some really close guy friends who "told him where to get off" and he was gone the next year.

But, the harassment has never been like a daily thing. This was just random circumstances for the past, what...12 years? I can count on my HAND how many times that has heppened, so yeah, the tumblr thing that women are harassed ALL DAY ERRY DAY AND YOU ARE A VICTIM EVEN IF YOU DON'T KNOW IT is fucking bullshit. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen though.
