Re: Advice for Keeping Goldfish
(Anonymous) 2014-09-28 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)We got some carnival goldfish and kept them for a couple of years and they grew HUGE. Like, at least 10 inches. And the only reason they stopped (I think) is because we refused to get bigger and bigger tanks. But the poor things were stuck in this way too small tank. We couldn't have any decoration in it either -- no small pebbles -- because when they would swim, the power of each stoke would send the rocks flying EVERYWHERE.
Get fish of a definitive size. Maybe zebrafish or beta fish (though don't keep males together!). If you use tap water, make sure to add some dechlorinating liquid to the water.
You can buy plant bulbs for your tank and if you keep it in the sun, they'll sprout and look lovely (mine even had a flower!). But this means algae on the tank, so make sure you clean it often enough.
I tried to clean my tank at least every week. Two weeks at most. Change the filter regularly and don't overfeed. We fed twice a day.
That's basically it.
Kept the beta fish for two years happily and the goldfish for over 7 (until my mother purposely killed them…).

(Anonymous) 2014-09-28 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)I know goldfish can live a long-ass time, though. Unfortunately, they tend to get rather big. Zebrafish are nice, but they aren't the most beautiful fishes. I think they're cute though!
There's lots known about their biology, however, considering they're one of the model animal systems. Especially in terms of their development.
Re: Advice for Keeping Goldfish
My cousin had a goldfish and as long as you keep getting bigger tanks, they keep growing. Unfortunately, most people end up killing theirs before they get that big.
Re: Advice for Keeping Goldfish
(Anonymous) 2014-09-28 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)And I know you're probably not offering it as good advice or anything but "a goldfish only grows as big as you let them" is only partially true... Their outsides stunt growth but their organs continue to increase in size and it's a miserable existence, so for goldfish who get very large you really just need to count on having a huge tank.
Re: Advice for Keeping Goldfish
(Anonymous) 2014-09-28 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)I actually wouldn't recommend goldfish for the reasons I stated -- I'm well aware that ours were miserable, but after upgrading the tank two times, it was just too unwieldy to continue (we never expected them to get that big and went into it pretty blind -- carnival goldfish, like I said).
We did our best with what we had, but I think it was more a mercy than anything when my mom killed the fish.
Also…about goldfish…some of them will jump out of the tank. We had a couple that kept jumping out at the groove where the filter was early on. Lost two fish that way. So make sure you cover that with something.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-28 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)Yeah lids are needed for a lot of fish.
