Nope, that's normal. If the POV character doesn't know their name, what else can you do?

Just to characters that have names and are on good terms with the POV character. So, "Jake walked up to the barista and planted a big kiss on his lips"... um no. Haha.

But I don't think that sentence would be inappropriate if it's supposed to be a surprising event for the reader. Presumably the barista would be introduced to the reader in the next line or so.

That's true, if it's like that and similar occurrences. But if they met at the beginning of the fic/story and know each other the whole way through there's no way I'm not going to find it weird.
