Depression is a symptom of vitamin C deficiency (aka scurvy). Usually one of the earlier ones to present, in fact. Much before the prototypical lesioning that gets associated with it.

Just something to consider.

No. Depression is not a symptom of scurvy. The early symptoms of scurvy can read like depression.

Don't just casually spread misinformation like that.

To be fair, the word "depression" doesn't just refer to the clinical condition. But he really should have said "can be" instead of "is."

You're right, my bad. I didn't mean to imply that Vitamin C deficiency always manifests with depression as a symptom. I meant to say "one of the symptoms of vitamin C deficiency is depression" but I just got lazy.

I understand that you want to make a distinction between certain forms of depression here, but a period of minor depression is still depression, even in the DSMV.

I'm not "spreading misinformation", since there's no clinical difference between a transient depressive condition and major depression save for the length of time a patient (sufferer if you'd prefer) is likely to have the disorder. You can make an argument that there might be differences in mechanisms (and you might be right, depending on the disease), but if you're trying to assert that forms of depression other than a major depressive episode aren't depression, I'm sorry, but psychology as a discipline disagrees with you.

I think you really should have said "can be" rather than "is," because this reads very badly.
