Re: LGBTQ people

One at a time, so it didn't feel like a giant spectacle with everybody watching me. Started with my sister and I just kind of said it in a "hey can I tell you something" kind of a way. Pretty sure she was hanging out on the stairs when I sat down with my mom. Her, we had an "I need to talk to you," conversation. I just said that there was somebody that I liked, and when the moment was right I dropped that it was a guy.

It helped knowing they were in my corner when I told my dad. He was pissed, and I think it was one part "what would all his friends think" and two parts he was really invested in this future for me that he'd dreamed up, and being gay wasn't really a part of that. He didn't disown me or anything, but things were pretty awkward for a while. I think my mom talked some sense into him. The three of us told my little brother about a month later. I wanted to give them the opportunity to decide how and when he learned about gay people.

Honestly? It wasn't easy and it wasn't fun, but ultimately when it was said and done, it was a load off. But I had a pretty OK relationship with my family before. I'm not sure how I would have done it if I didn't.
