He wasn't rich to start with - he was at the educated-but-not-very-wealthy part of the British middle-class. There were a lot of Jewish people in early Scientology when it was less religion and more self-help, and that's when Gaiman's parents started out in it. Gaiman himself has publicly said that it was terrible for him but some family members are still Scientologists. He personally identifies as someone with Jewish heritage but not Jewish. The vast majority of his grandparents' relatives died in the Holocaust and his grandparents didn't want their kids to be Jewish.
