I didn't say that white people didn't have problems. Sexism, classism, poverty - those happen to people of all races.

But in an interview do you think someone's going to look at the white guy and know his personal history?

DA
They're not going to look at you (or me) and know ours, either.

But they are going to see my race and gender and make assumptions based on past experiences colored by racist history or portrayals - prejudices they may not even know they have - that may be a detriment to me instead of judging me on my merits on the resume in front of them.

You just keep telling yourself that, if you like being miserable. Me, I know racism isn't over, but every day I see the world getting a little better and the people who would presume to know me just because they've seen the color of my skin holding less power.

How can they not see it if it's part of us (and they have functioning eyes), but okay, I admire your optimism.

NAYRT

You're the one bringing the negative association to that though. You're not giving the world a chance to prove it's not as bad as you think it is.

Yep, she just made up racism.

So every single person in the world is racist? Oh well best just lie down on the floor and surrender to the big bad world then.

Ok, I kind of feel like you're just trolling now. Ugh.

Just really, really fed up. What a loser.

they won't know hers but because she's a woman of color, they'll assume.

You, living in the heart and mind of everybody, would of course know. Tell me, what's it like holding all those thoughts in your head? Does it crowd out any original thought you might have?

But here's the thing, don't you think that having been abused by one's parents is going to leave psychological scars? That could make it difficult to reach out and relate to people? And thus impact how you behave in an interview? Not to mention all the other problems it would cause in your life.

What I'm saying is that some disadvantages aren't as blatantly obvious (they can be hidden) but that doesn't mean they can't impact our lives just as profoundly.

I know it sucks that some people let race be a deciding factor. But I'm saying I don't feel like that's a reason to give up because almost everyone is disadvantaged in some way even if it isn't readily apparent.

One of my white, male friends has Crohn's Disease. He also had cancer as a child (likely due to the drugs he was taking) and, although he was cured, they have to monitor him and he's had a few scares (not to mention that he has a metal rod in his back...).

He's white. He's male. He's straight. His family is well-off. And looking at him, he *seems* perfectly healthy. But I wouldn't switch places with him given what I know about his health and the enormous problems he has. His illness is debilitating and hugely impacts his life.

That's true - people will judge about anything, about any physical ailment or appearance - and it isn't fair or acceptable if you're not judging their talents for a job - I'm talking about myself being a WOC, in a world where hating other races has had a long and ugly history that still impacts us. Living in a world where I won't even be paid on the same amount as a man, let alone a white man, because of longstanding institutional racism.

I agree with you that the reality of racism and sexism sucks. But I think your way of viewing it, of saying:

"I don't necessarily feel the need to work hard when the scales are so imbalanced against me. I could be five times more talented than anyone else but being a POC, and a woman at that, I'll probably be shafted, not to mention paid less or having my knowledge undermined being in a STEM field. Like...why bother."

Is what's rubbing me the wrong way. It's like when waiters say "Well, I know that black people won't tip me as well, so I'm not even going to TRY to give them as good of service as white people."

Like, sure, experience may have taught this waiter that they're not going to be tipped as well but that's kind of defeatist, isn't it? Not every black customer is the same right? Nor is every employer. It just feels like your mentality might be perpetuating the very thing you hope to avoid.
