It's just more visible.

Isn't that the point. The secret tortured past list isn't the first thing that comes to mind when your eyes land on anyone.

That's certainly true, but my point is simply that just because something isn't visible doesn't mean it can't impact your life as profoundly.

That doesn't mean racism/sexism don't exist, just that I don't feel that it's a good reason to give up. Being discouraged is understandable, but non-visible problems aren't lesser problems.

I don't think morieris said anything contrary to your point, or implied that she had the be-all-end-all of problems, so I don't see how it applies. And even with your "lesser problems", there's still the intersectionality of race, gender, ability, and whatever else you can name that creates a unique hardship for everyone.

But I agree about not giving up! If you're in a rut though, you're in a rut. Telling someone about the hypothetical problems of others they're so lucky to totally not have? Kind of has nothing to do with anything, although I get the "chin up" vibe you're trying for.
