Didn't Geocities have a lot of those group page of sites? Like, this site is part of this ring, you can click on the arrows to go to other sites in the same ring?

Webrings. If you created a fan page, whether for Ranma, Labyrinth (man, Labyrinth webrings were huge) or cooking shows, you signed it up and it was listed in the webring and they gave you a little bit of code to stick at the bottom of your main page. Same deal with mailing lists, you signed up to be able to send an email to a mailing list and then you'd receive other people's emails to the list with the encouragement to have group discussions, art sharing, and fanfic. There was a real sense of community in the geocities era. Something which is lacking from tumblr which is basically just a load of howler monkeys screaming abuse into the ether.

Oh my god, I laughed so hard. Perfect description of Tumblr!

I had one, complete with sparkly bats, spinning skulls, and blood dripping vamp fangs. I am so embarrassed by my teenage, twee-gothed out self. So glad that site has been obliterated.
