Red hair, green eyes. Her sister (not adopted) was blonde. Pretty obvious.

Red hair and green eyes do not automatically equal white skin. Neither does blond hair. Both occur - naturally - with brown skin tones. Blond and red hair are recessives, so they're more rare regardless of the skin color, but they're possible with any skin tone. Same deal with green and blue and gray eyes.

This is, however, 1960s Britain we're talking about, not a remote island where dark skin and red hair are normal. Scotland has 10% redheaded population, and I'd guarantee that almost all of them are pasty-pale. Move further down south about a hundred miles, and I doubt you'll find a lot of variation.
