Are you trying to guilt trip me with your suicide? WTF? You are no better.

No, I'm not trying to guilt trip you. I'm trying to show you why talking like that to someone with depression is the wrong thing to do.

Then you should have said that talking like that was the wrong thing to do.

Instead, you came off sounding like you were accusing POC who were offended by the idea that being a POC is too difficult to overcome, of making you want to kill yourself.

You're right. I'm sorry.

I'll apologize to the op if my tone offended her or hurt her. My intention wasn't to make her feel bad, only to show how illogical the sentiment she expressed is when applied elsewhere.

Let me add to this: I know where you're coming from, with what you said. When you feel like nothing you do matters and you won't get anywhere in life because everything sucks and you suck at everything... that's shitty as fuck. When a depressed person is like that, it's pointless to point out that if everyone thought that way, no one would get anywhere... because it's not up to us to live their life or determine their measures of success, or estimate their self-worth.

But. When you say you can't get anywhere because *race*, because *gender*, then that's something a whole lot of us share. That's something that affects us too. When you put race and gender up on this pedestal as insurmountable life ruiners, what do you expect the rest of us who share those things to feel like?

My perspective on it comes from her saying that she has depression and she knows that that's contributing. That makes it sound to me like normal frustration over race and gender have been made into something much worse by her depression.

I can see what you're saying, but based on my experiences with depression and the way it warps obstacles that other people might not even bat an eye at, it seems to me like this place that she's in has less to do with racism and sexism and more to do with that aspect.

Point taken. That's something to consider. I don't think it can be confirmed either way by anyone except the OP, though.

But then it gets into the mess of which is better, giving the statements a free pass as something said by a depressed person, or saying something about what those statements implied? I could see why someone would choose the former, but I'd lean toward the latter regardless... the idea that waving it off as okay because depressed people are allowed to say things with unfortunate implications doesn't sit comfortably with me.
