I don't think they see their characters as their children that literally. If they did, they probably wouldn't torture them. They feel protective and proprietary.

IIRC some of the authors who say their characters are their children are...Diana Gabaldon and Anne Rice.

But that's still very sitcom dad of them when they get uppity because they don't want writers to want their characters to go out on dates until they're public-domain years-old.
