Isn't the whole "they're my children" thing part of the response of authors who are really possessive re: fanfiction?

I could definitely be wrong, but that's the context I've heard it in.

Actually, it probably is the case that authors have different ways of mentally interacting with their characters. Some are probably like you, OP, and others are probably more like those who see their characters as their kids.
