That's a good point. It's something I really lamented about the reboots that suddenly he had a ~legacy~ to live up to -- because his dad was a hero. And the film also felt the need to flat-out tell us he was a genius with "off-the-charts" aptitude.

Kirk in TOS might have been the youngest captain in Federation history, but everything we heard about him supported the fact that he'd gotten there through hard work.

And reboot Kirk become captain almost a decade BEFORE TOS Kirk did on top of everything.
