The Compilation definitely soured my view of what Square Enix thinks of Final Fantasy VII. I don't get how the same people could have written both the original games and the retconned spin-offs. Well, now that I think about it, they weren't the same writers/director, and were operating under completely different companies...

Now I'm nostalgic for Squaresoft, dammit.

The Compilation is one of those things that sounds incredibly great in concept, but there is no way in hell it could actually live up to everyone's ideas/concepts/headcanons in its actual execution.

Take, for example, 'Dirge of Cerberus'. A game that focuses on Vincent Valentine (and by extension, fleshes out Yuffie and Reeve's characters a little) and goes into detail about his backstory? Great concept, but the execution failed so, so, so badly (strictly IMHO). The only thing that I can say was genuinely good about it was the voice acting. That's it.

I'm just frustrated at the overall wasted potential of the Compilation, but eh, that's the way the cookie crumbles I guess. =/

But yeah, I'm with you on classic Square. (I still weep for what they did to Parasite Eve. They went from a game with awesome female characters, that had POC as important NPCs, no hamfisted romantic subplots, AND the story just about passed the Bechdel Test to... PE2 and 'The 3rd Birthday'. UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!) I've been revisiting the older FFs + FF12 recently and while I'm not one of those 'MUH NOSTALGIA' folks, I just prefer the classic FF games to what we have now. But I digress. Sorry. D:

I just started playing FF12 and it is so much fun!

What other FF games for PS2/Nintendo DS would you recommend?

(Anonymous) 2014-10-03 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I'm currently replaying FFXII! Of my favourite games of all time c:

Hijacking this thread a bit, but whatever.

FFX and X-2 (well, and XI, but I'm not sure that's still supported or still in use as it's an online game. Never played it myself) are the only other main FF games made for PS2, and I personally find both great, though a lot of people dislike X-2 (I personally find it to be great fun). There's also Dirge of Cerberus, but I haven't played it myself though. You can also get the older ones made for PlayStation too (IV-IX), but they might run quite expensive now. In that case I love IV, VI, VII and IX, but am a bit ambivalent on VIII and haven't gotten around to playing V yet. (You can also play all of these on an emulator on your computer if that is an option for you. I think most PCs should be able to play the PS games if not the PS2s)

For DS you have FFXII: Revenant Wings, which is the continuation for XII. Not as great by far, but I think it's fun. You can also get FFIV for DS, but I haven't played this version myself. The original game is great though. FF Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift is also quite fun, though I prefer FF Tactics: War of the Lions for PSP. (Also, again you can get all of these on emulators.)

Also, here's links to full lists of games for all the consoles, there's a lot of sidegames I haven't mentioned C:

XI went offline when XIV: ARR went online.

Thanks for your thorough reply. Wow, so many games!

I think I've perhaps been lucky to hit on one of the best games of the series with XXII. It was pure luck. I was given a PS2 and bid on some second hand games, and whatever I didn't get outbid on, I bought. The older games are actually really cheap.

I looked up FFX and X-2 and they're PS3 only, I think, so they won't play on my machine.

I think I'll try to get Revenant Wings next for DS, because Balthier is my fave character so far in XXII and I understand he's in Revenant Wings as well, and I love the DS. Vaan's a bit annoying, your standard idiot teenager who keeps charging off into danger, but I suppose he's a necessary plot device.

Thanks a lot. I didn't know that Revenant Wings was a continuation of XXII, or that it was for the DS. I wondered why the graphics were so different in screenshots between the two games.

Really helpful!

AYRT

Happy to see that you've found it helpful! c: Am also happy to see you love the game! I know a lot of people who aren't too keen on it due to the kind of archaic speech (This might come from being ESL as most of my friends are however) and Vaan (due to the reasons you listed) to mention a couple of reasons. I think loving Balthier is an universal truth however. He's awesome.

FFX/-2 was actually made for PS2 originally, but they got a HD remake earlier this year for PS3, so that's probably why you only get up that they're for PS3. Here are both games on Amazon (Though you most likely can get them cheaper than this somewhere):

Ah, thanks for the information. It's confusing with all the formats and remakes.

I actually quite like the archaic dialogue, although there is a lot of it. English is my first language and I've read a lot of fantasy novels so that helps. The cut scenes are so beautifully animated in FFXXII. They take my breath away. I can't believe the game is so old. The scenes with the airship are just wonderful. The voice acting is superb.

The game has a real Star Wars feel which I really enjoy. I don't mind that they've almost blatantly ripped it off, as it's done with such care. There are so many visual nods, both to the original trilogy and the newer one. The city design is so like the city on Naboo that it's almost nostalgic. Balthier's airship is an obvious nod to the awesome Millenium Falcon. The Balthier & Fran itself relationship echoes Han Solo & Chewbacca, although of course I wouldn't let Fran hear me compare her to a Wookie.

I like that most of the characters in the game are actual believable adults. I'd heard that Final Fantasy is full of bland-faced teenagers and that didn't appeal. Luckily, apart from Vaan and Penelo, it isn't really the case.

FFX and X-2 are really cheap on my local ebay. Wooow! Thanks.

The 3rd Birthday...I don't even know where to begin. I have never seen a game rendered unplayable through story alone. It's absolutely toxic. :(

It's even worse because even though 3rd Birthday was a PSP game, the production values were clearly high--they were willing to put a lot of money into a sequel for a niche PS1 game. And they wasted it on a game where you watch the main character's clothing get ripped off while stumbling through 5 chapters of utter nonsense.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-10-03 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
Oh MAN. The 3rd Birthday is perhaps the only other game besides Dragon Age 2 I loathe with the intensity of a thousand white-hot suns. T3B stings even harder, simply because PE was such a huge part of my teenage years and meant a lot to me. To see it thoroughly destroyed -for lack of a better description- was a huge heartbreak for me.

I could kinda live with PE2, ridiculous (in a bad way) it was at times, but even then I don't view it as having happened, because it required some hefty mental gynmastics for it to work (esp. with the whole Neo Ark crap and whatnot). But T3B was probably the sign to me that the Square I knew and loved was gone and yeah. It is toxic. The whole 'ripping clothes to show "damage"' thing makes me want to throw up in my mouth a little, ughhh. And the story makes absolutely no sense either. Also, the "plot twist"/ending pissed me off so much. Why did they do that to Aya? D:

... Yeah, I have, uh, issues with T3B. Sorry. ._.;;

tl;dr: I'm of a mind that PE2 and T3B never happened. No, just... no.
