21. A million flavours of word to you, good sir (or ma'am). A MILLION. I get really irritated when people bitch about one of the earlier FF games as not being as good as one of the later ones, actually, because there's this thing called "stepping stones." =/ And VII may be overrated or not, but the sheer number of people it got into the genre can't be debated. Maybe some people would rather that a lot of those people weren't, but on the other hand, most of those same people, if they truthfully assessed themselves, might not be either.

Though to be fair, I've met people stupid enough to bash Mario. My little cousin is younger than the PS1, in his defence, but on the other hand, I just can't respect someone who can't stand Super Mario World.

26. ...I swear this one isn't mine, bb! I know that's the font I use on icons and my exact sentiment towards this game, but uh, >> Not me all the same. I really do have a lurking feeling that it's going to be horrible, but on the other hand, why isn't it coming out some place I can play it so that I can see the horrible first hand? I'm not sure whether I'm more disappointed with Squeenix for selling out everything, or if I'm more disappointed that they won't bring their selling out to the States.

Edited because I sort of forgot that "sir" isn't an all-gender statement. You'd be amazed how often that happens.

People who bitch about the earlier FF games not being as good as the later ones probably just played the later ones first or didn't play the earlier games at all.. Having played the SNES games first, I think they're much better than the PS1+ era, fancy graphics or no. It really comes down to what formed the image of 'Final Fantasy' in your mind.

...And speaking of what formed the image of Final Fantasy in my mind, I am absolutely disgusted that they're making a sequel to FFIV. I grew up on that game. Making a sequel to it, for me, is like... making a sequel to the Princess Bride. Just - no. I'm going to pretend that it doesn't exist for the sake of my sanity.

It's funny... I played Kingdom Hearts first, got into FFVII afterwards. After that I watched someone play VIII, played X, then XII... and then went back and played IV and VI.

Here are my impressions:

VII - Eh, decently fun, but significantly overhyped. It IS vitally important, and I should know, I just wrote a huge paper for a class on the influences of anime on videogaming and the FF series was EVERYWHERE in that bloody paper. But the fanboiz get a little shrieky sometimes, which is why it gets a bad rep.
VIII - Interesting characters (Laguna! Irvine! but not Squall or Rinoa >.< ), WTF plot and I could not get into the battle system. :\
X - Fun ish. yayyy.
XII - Plot was great in the beginning, battle system annoyed me the least.

IV - No offense to you, but I couldn't get into it. I'm sure it's great, but the plot was (at least initially) far too much like all the fantasy books I read as a kid - which meant that rather than nostalgia I was merely struck by how cliche and boring it seemed. Please don't kill me :\

However, I played VI...

WHY DOES THIS GAME NOT GET MORE LOVE?! Christ, it has some of the BEST writing I've ever SEEN in a game, and while I STILL loathe random encounters it's FUN TO PLAY. The amount of characters is a little hard to deal with (I never use Cyan, despite liking his character, for instance) but DAMN. The PLOT. The CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. ARGH. I swear, if the game had been 3D, we would have wank-tastic Kefka fanboys instead of Sephiroth.

This is coming from someone who gets eyestrain and headaches from looking at sprites (no offense to sprite artists, it just happens and makes me sad 'cause sprite games are thus very hard for me to play). I play it anyway. It's so, so good and I can't believe I didn't pick it up earlier.

... MY POINT is that I DID play the later ones first... but I still say that VI is AMAZING.

And if Square makes a sequel to VI I'll feel the same as you do about IV. No, just... don't. Please, for the love of god don't ruin this wonderful, wonderful game. Remake with really, REALLY shiny FMVs like the DS version of IV? Ok, I can live with that, especially since VI seriously deserves this (so many scenes would have worked so much better in 3d).

But god, Square, please stop making sequels. PLEASE. :(

Now you've just encouraged me to go off on my impressions of the series. :P

(Skipping the NES games because I could never get past the first few hours. It takes a certain level of hardcore to play that stuff...)

IV: Can't speak of it without gushing and flashbacking.

V: Terrible story, lame characters, fantastic job class system. Perfect difficulty level. (I think every FF game after this, save Tactics and XII, was too easy.)

VI: RIGHT YOU ARE, MAN. The character development was just. So. Good. And the soundtrack, the SOUNDTRACK. But once you get to the World of Ruin you can blast through with Terra, Celes, Relm, and Mog and all abilities besides magic become useless. Bleahh.

Mystic Quest: The worst RPG I have ever played. Seriously, it blew.

VII: Pretty much the same as you.

Tactics: Best FF game ever. Seriously. The plot was complex, the characters were original, and the gameplay was deeeeep as the ocean. This game does not get enough credit.

VIII: Storyline had plot holes the size of craters, but was enjoyable. Gameplay mechanics were too easily abusable, but was very innovative (which I liked). I liked the junction system, but drawing was a pain in the ass.

IX: Awesome in every way. I find it very hard to criticize.

Crystal Chronicles: Ehhhhhhh. Couldn't get into it.

X: Nice story, needed moar sidequests. (The ones that it had were obscenely and inanely difficult). Was too linear. Soundtrack blew. Was generally okay, though.

X-2: I am the only one on the planet who thought this game was awesome cake, aren't I?

XII: Nice plot, but basically an offline MMORPG with regards to gameplay. -.-;;

And I heartily second the plea for no more sequels. Rape is bad, Squeenix, rape is bad!! Unfortunately this is the kind of 'rape' where you secretly enjoy it a little.

Hmmmmm, maybe I should ~~download~~ get me some Tactics / Tactics Advance sometime...

I really, really, REALLY want to get my hands on orchestral version of VI's soundtrack. I'm newly to World of Ruin, just got myself Gau again and was about to go looking for Celes, but my aforementioned problem with eyestrain and sprites caught up with me x_X; I haven't been able to play it for about a week now 'cause every time I turn it on I'm like "ARGH MY EYES :( " which is UPSETTING.

Yeah, X was too linear. And XII's sountrack is bad too :\ bleh, NOTHING stood out in that whole damn game.

... and yeah. .___.; we squeenix fans, we do dig the non-con.

~~Download away. Tactics needs moar fanz.~~ Tactics Advance made me cry tears of blood. The plot is - get this - a bunch of elementary school kids travel to the mystical world of Ivalice. *facepalm* They basically took the complex class and ability systems from Tactics and dumbed them down for the GBA's younger audience. D.: Despite that, I know I'm going to torture myself and play A2 as soon as it comes out in English.

PS2 graphics have spoiled me with their eyecandy, and I also find it hard to go back sometimes. I won't deny that a remade FFIV with pretty cut scenes ~~not just those crappy two videos on the PS1 port~~ makes me feel something akin to orgasm.

We Squeenix fans just can't say no. ;D
