It's really annoying and condescending when people say that sexuality/relationships 'cheapen' the source material. I mean, sure, some stuff is cheap and shallow and just plain bad, but not everything in fandom that involves sexuality and non-canon relationships is a disservice to the original. Exploring the relationships between characters in some cases not only provides good entertainment, but different and deeper insight into the story and characters. It's really annoying when people act all high and mighty because they don't ship anything, or don't read fic, or don't RP or don't draw fanart. It's just an expression of how the stories make people feel, and sexuality/romance is just part of the human experience. It's not demeaning to characters when people want to explore parts of characters that aren't expanded upon in the story.

I'm not trying to force any pairings on anyone, nor am I trying to show what isn't there. If you ask me why I like a pairing, I'll answer you as honestly as I can. If you don't see what I see, it doesn't bother me. What does bother me is these anonymous people acting like I'm some sort of mental midget because I choose to do so. I ship, I'm interested in relationships between characters, sexual or not. It doesn't make me a "bad" fan who is destroying the source material.

Very well put, I totally agree. I never understood the whole "cheapen" thing. It seems kind of counterintuitive to me. Like, uh, a depiction of a loving sexual relationship is cheapening something? I get that there's a lot of shallow stuff out there, but in theory... I just don't get it. And it's irritating putting a lot of careful thought into something and then being talked down to. :/

(Anonymous) 2007-12-15 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Mostly, what I don't get is how one person's enjoyment of something can effectively lessen another person's enjoyment of something else entirely. Or how one person's dislike for something has any bearing on how much another person likes that very same thing. Fandom is more fun when you're not all up in everybody else's business all the time.

I just wish people would stop comparing romantic relationships with non-romantic ones. Apples and oranges, people! They're not "the same", they're not "this one's better, this one's worse", they're just different! ....yeah. XD I like pairings, myself, but I also like exploring family ties and occasionally friendships.

WORD TO THE MAX

[identity profile] abyss-of-colors.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
That's exactly what I wanted to say. If you don't 'see' something, whether it's shipping or even why certain characters are loved, IT'S OKAY. HONEST.

[identity profile] hopelikefever.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
I totally agree with you. ♥

Hell, in some cases, that sort of stuff really makes me like something even more, like in... Gankutsuou. One could take the affection Albert felt for the Count (and vice-versa) as a platonic sort of thing, but personally, I think Albert would drop to his knees in a hot second for the Count. To me, that tightrope walk Albert does throughout his entire relationship with the Count is what makes their interactions so interesting to me, because it adds that extra depth/layer to their thought process. Albert could be thinking one sort of thing whilst speaking to the Count in a scene, but what if he were struggling with homosexual feelings as well...? And on the Count's side, too! If he were to have any positive emotion at all towards Albert, it would make things so much more interesting, simply because of the of fact that he'd be struggling with his hate as well.

Er, I kind of digressed. But what I was trying to get at was: in no way does sexuality (either by fans or through 'subtext') 'cheapen' a series. If anything, it really adds a new layer of perception. ...Unless you're in it for the pretty, which is cool too.

TLDR: WHOO SEX YEAH.

Thank you for saying that so well. Not that I don't have ships just for the pretty - and there's nothing wrong with that, anyway - but some of my favourite things to do is analyze the relationships between characters, the different depths and layers and possibilities and that's another aspect. Often times, when I ship something, I ship it in platonic as well as romantic ways.

So long story short, it's perfectly fine to read into things and dig deeper.

Yes.

On all accounts.

[identity profile] vespawoman.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I just hate it when some fanshippers try to find something that obviously isn't there and tries to prove it's canon. It's one of the most annoying things I find about fandoms, and why I generally steer clear of them. Nothing wrong with shipping pairings and what not, I do it sometimes, too. The only difference is that I realize that most of mine are definitely not canon, and I don't take it too seriously.

[identity profile] asdhjfbciwu3487.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
The funny thing is, a vast majority of people in fandoms do too. Even for my OTPs or whatever, when others try to force it onto others and saying it's 'canon', it seriously rubs me the wrong way. I actually hate it when people do stuff like what the OP for secret 7 was describing (though, my rant wasn't even specifically about this secret, but the attitude in general). But lumping everyone together and saying that we're ruining the source material when in fact we hate the very same fandom attitudes they do? It really grinds my gears. It's like lumping all yaoi fans together as "fanbrats", when the vast majority of them hate the fanbrats as well.

[identity profile] vespawoman.livejournal.com 2007-12-18 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I understand. I think that's just as bad as the delusional fanshippers :P. I just like to play devil's advocate at times. I agree, though, I think lumping everyone together that way isn't cool.
