First, but not most influential.

Seriously, take a vote.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-16 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
take a vote.

Where?

I realize FF (VII in particular) paved the way for console RPGs in the US and Europe. Doesn't change the fact that DQ created the genre and inspired an entire generation of game-makers, and is plainly legendary.

F!S is big. If you make a secret that asked HAY U, WHICH DO U THINK WAS MORE INFLUENTIAL, that should take care of it. But judging by the reply to today's secret, I think the results are pretty clear.

Doesn't change the fact that DQ created the genre and inspired an entire generation of game-makers, and is plainly legendary.

None of that actually refutes 21's point about FF, though.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-16 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
You're missing the point. The question of "Where?" wasn't of logistics and I wasn't looking for you to give me advice; there are plenty of places to ask. The point is that the answer will be different depending on where you ask, which is also why I brought up specific regions in my comment.

None of that actually refutes 21's point about FF, though.

Uh, none except I think it's overrated compared to something which should be rated higher? Again, you're missing the point entirely and this discussion if futile.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-16 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Saying it twice doesn't make it right, you know? :)

The way I see it, 21 is saying that the fact that you prefer DQ doesn't mean that FF is not groundbreaking and influential in its own rights for reasons etc. and therefore FF is not overrated. There is no direct comparison to DQ in terms of merits at all. And to bring up regions, the secret clearly mentions stateside. So this is about people stateside. And the point stands.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-16 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Not the same anon here, but even if you want to argue that FF is not overrated (and I don't think it is, actually), DQ IS the more influential of the two. FF would never have reached the states if it wasn't created in Japane, and FF would not have been created there if not for DQ. I think that's the point the previous anon was trying to make. I personally am dismayed at the lack of appreciation and respect for DQ in the US and like to use any opportunity to sing its praises.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-16 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
And before someone makes a snarky remark, I meant Japan, not Japane. Sorry for the typo.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-16 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
I know DQ is influential in Japan, I've even read the spinoff manga, and hey, it would do well to be popular here too. But you know what? Being created first and going on to influence another game doesn't automatically make it overall more influential. Influence is about the sway something over people, the range of effect. In the end, FF was the franchise that broke the western market. It owes DQ its existence, but that doesn't make it less important. It made more people care. Give it some creds.

not OP

(Anonymous) 2007-12-16 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
Not to get involved in a wankfest, but they had to make a law in Japan banning the release of DQ on a workday, because whole businesses shut down while everyone played hooky to go buy it. They never needed to do that for FF, sorry.

Re: not OP

(Anonymous) 2007-12-16 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I know DQ is influential in Japan. And it was the first of its kind. Why would this be surprising?

(Anonymous) 2007-12-16 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
the spinoff manga

The spin-off? Which one? There are millions. I honestly don't want to be needlessly confrontational, but it just reeks off your comments that you really have no idea what you're talking about. People like you is why I think FF is too overrated: it makes people think it's the only RPG worth knowing anything about, and anything else is secondary to it.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-16 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I read only one, it's the only one I would know to mention. But as you might understand, an attack of my merits doesn't affect my argument, which you chose not to addresss.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-16 11:05 am (UTC)(link)
you prefer DQ

That's why I said I prefer it and think it's more influential. Those two things are not connected. That I prefer DQ has nothing to do with its influence, just like the OP prefering FF has nothing to do with its historical significance, I imagine. Who likes things for their significance alone, anyway?

doesn't mean that FF is not groundbreaking and influential in its own rights for reasons etc.

That's why I acknowledged that yes, it had been influential in some areas. I never said it wasn't influential.

Seriously, are you even reading the replies to your comments?

(Anonymous) 2007-12-16 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
You are choosing to ignore all the relevant parts, where I argued that Fact A: DQ is awesome and Fact B: FF did a number on for the genre in the west have nothing to do with each other. DQ has influence in the east, FF made it in the west, I brought up stateside. It would be nice if we could do this without the straw man argument.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-16 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
In the interest of closure, let me just run through this one last time. The secret, in my view, is about the OP preferring FF, but is also about the game historical significance. Which it has, as you've admitted.

DQ was the first, it's well-respected, I'll even admit FF is way overrated compared to it, and quality-wise, who knows? But FF revolutionised the genre. Well, in reality it didn't do anything, just broke the market barrier, but that was enough. And now it's the only thing everyone here thinks of and talks about (possibility of an overhype), but that's what it means to be influential. DQ doesn't have this. Does this mean this should be the case? No. But we're not arguing for merits. Simply put: DQ was the first, but FF made it bigger.
