I'm under the impression that 'Over-hyped' and 'Over-rated' are about the same connotation here...

Uhm, yes, they are. But when the said "is "over-hyped" the phrase you'd use for Mario?", it was a rhetorical question to which the answer is "no". Basically, it was saying that you don't use "over-hyped" for a highly influential series, such as Mario, and then it was comparing FF to the series mentioned. Reading comprehension FTW.

Oh fabulous, shall I send you Hooked on Phonics for that?

But as far as influential, forgive me if I have my doubts. True, it did help make an impact on the industry and it was one of the first games to utilize 3D graphics, but as far as still being on the cutting edge--that's unlikely. It's popular true, but from what's been gathered, Squenix seems to be a bit too focused on CERTAIN Final Fantasies, mainly VII--now them having Sephiroth in Dissidia isn't so much an example so much as Nomura being instructed to construct the new Versus heroine as a female version of Cloud.

As someone has probably already stated, Final Fantasy's popular--we KNOW already. Some people don't like it, or want to express the impact a certain series has on them, they compare to Final Fantasy--which is arguably a religion to some--and it causes people like SP to freak--it's rather childish, it's like comparing new sci-fi movies to Star Wars, should it honestly matter if some people don't like it?

Hooked on Phonics! My life's dream!

Ok, really. I wasn't arguing about influential or not, merely trying to illustrate a poin which you seemed to have missed. I'm not really going to argue with you on the rest, mostly because, well, I don't disagree with you. As far as I'm concerned, the Compilation can go screw itself, and while I did have fun with FFXII, I'm not very optimistic about the direction Squenix is taking. Frankly, I call myself a FF fan, but mostly because I like (a couple of) the older games.

Because really, that isn't the point of this secret. The point the SP was making was that FF is a franchise that in the past made an impact on the industry (especially in the West). The way I read it, it was saying that you can like or dislike it as much as you want, everyone is entitled to an opinion, but it was directed at those who bash FF to look cool without understanding that, whether you personally enjoy the series or not, it's a piece of gaming history.

(And yes, Dragon Warrior/Quest was more influential. That doesn't mean that Final Fantasy wasn't.)
