Overreaction much? He acted shitty to Snape one time. As a teenager.

One time that we saw first-hand. If you consider the way they acted around each other and talked to each other - the Marauders calling Snape "Snivellus" for example - this was not a one-off thing. Not saying that Snape didn't give as good as he got, but it's generally accepted that before James and Lily started dating, James was a pretty big douchebag.
