You're getting paid barely anything for working your ass off, pretty much. While I was down there, I could barely afford to feed myself. I had zero free time, my workplace was unfriendly, and I'd never been more depressed in my life.

I guess part of it can be blamed on my own homesickness, but even considering that it was far worse than I could have imagined.

Some people get lucky, and they have a blast. But some people don't and it's a living hell.

Aw shit, that's rough, I'm sorry. I've come out on the shitty end of both the 'crap pay' and the 'crap environment' lotteries in the past, so I can relate. That sounds to me like how most badly-organized volunteer efforts are like.

Thanks ♥

Yeah it was a lousy deal and I got one of the shorter ends of the stick. So when you recommend it to people, make sure you let them know that there are bad situations too. The best advice I can give to anyone going to the program is do not go if you do not get the job you wanted the most. That one little detail probably made the biggest difference in my experience.

Oh def. Thanks for the insight. Guess I should have put a little more research into it or something XD I mean, yeah, if it's one of those deals where you pick your top three choices and stuff, I always make sure I get my top three choices. There's enough of the unknown factor going on as it is.

Out of curiosity, what were you expecting to make? They tell you upfront what they pay you and hours and such. And working your ass off? Of course. That's what you're there for. When I was there, it was $6/hour (I hear it's higher now). And back then, in the post-9/11 tourism slump, we got only 30 hours a week - and only because they were contractually obligated to give us at least that many. Even then, paying for rent and bills and food was never a problem, and I still had plenty of money left over for fun stuff and souvenirs. I've heard complaints from other people about the same thing, and honestly can't understand what costs them so much (unless you buy groceries at Goodings, in which case you need to be clocked over the head and taught how to buy groceries on a budget).
