19. Newsflash: some mods are students, too. And some of those mods who are students not only go to school, but hold down full time jobs and raise children, too. They clearly are much better at time management than you are.

You know when your exams are when you sign up, which is usually THREE MONTHS before your exams and papers are due. If you can't make the time to write, don't sign up. We mods would be much happier if you had the foresight and time management skills, trust me. University may be the bridge between dependence on your parents and adulthood, but we're not your parents, so please try to act like an adult. Even if this is just a hobby.

I can understand being upset with lack of time-management, but things come up? I just think you're taking it a little too... personally. :/

Speaking as another mod, no, we don't. We've seen the hurt feelings from people who have put forth effort and gotten nothing in return, or gotten a quickie replacement gift because someone waited until the last minute to work on a prompt they've had for sometimes upwards of three months.

If you can't manage your own time, don't sign up. Simple as that. No one forces anyone's hand, but have the decency to fulfil your obligations. School is a lame ass excuse. As per #19's statement, if they already had failing grades to worry about, why did they sign up for a fic fest to begin with?

Personal responsibility, people. Get some. It's a lovely thing to have.

It's possible they weren't failing before it began... I don't know, and I shouldn't be expressing my opinion. I would like to say thanks for being a mod of such a high-stress thing, and I'm sorry people are idiots. ...Not that I count for much.

Ok, but were the mods informed about the exams? Was she granted an extension that was missed? There are many factors that aren't listed here, and only that person and the mod know them.
As a mod, I can tell you that chasing down people for overdue fics, is not fun. Begging for pinch hitters is not fun. Re-arranging the gifts for several participants to accommodate someone dropping out? IS NOT FUN. If fandom is for fun, shouldn't it be fun for everyone? And if the mods should know that chasing people down etc is part of the job, likewise the participant should know that submitting their fic on time, and keeping their mod up to speed if they need extensions - and then follow through.

The fact is, the person who's secret it is knew that exams existed. They did not just "come up".

As someone who had a professor pull a complete 180 at the end of the semester, change what everything counted for, and then tell us he wouldn't grant the extra credit I spent five days working on? I'm just saying things can change without notice. And I shouldn't have put my nose in because that's exactly why I don't enter fic/pic-givings, my life tends to be too erratic. Sorry to fan the flames.

Re: 19

But that is not a common occurrence. I spent a few semesters as a professor and I (and my colleagues) never pulled anything like that. Come to think of it, during my own time in college and graduate school, I never had anything like that happen to me.

Even if something like that would happen to a person, one would think they would use Earth Logic and immediately back out of their fannish obligations.

All that aside, please keep in mind that we exchange mods often distribute assignments two - three months before they're actually due.

Actually, I don't know when my exams are when I sign up. My school doesn't work that way.

Still think it's ridic~ :)
