I didn't really feel Whedon characterized him in a bad way, though? It made sense for him to act the way he did, what with recent massive trauma and loss and all, and I found him very sympathetic.

He felt like such a bully (were they trying to make us feel sympathetic towards Tony?) and alpha male to me. Which is not what we see in The First Avenger or TWS. Had I never seen TWS, I would dislike Steve right now.

That's exactly my problem with it too. He was such a bully, which is the exact opposite of what he's supposed to be. I get that he's dealing with LOADS of shit, but he didn't act like that after he lost Bucky AT ALL. It just felt completely out of character. I got the sense that it was done purely to prop up Tony's character -- have Steve doubt him and be antagonistic so that we would cheer for Tony and be so happy when, in the end, he does actually make the "sacrifice play" and prove Steve wrong.

Urghh

Did he even mention Bucky in the Avengers movie? I don't think he did.

That movie sucked so many balls.

Fandom isn't much better. >.>

The severe lack of fics addressing that the Avengers takes place like 10 days after Steve is found and thawed is distressing. And the times I have seen in a fic where it is mentioned that it happened 70 years ago so it isn't important makes me facepalm.

That's so stupid it's almost impressive. How do they not understand that for Steve it was less than a month ago? OR THAT EVEN IF IT WAS 70 YEARS AGO FOR HIM, THINGS CAN STILL HURT AFTER 70 YEARS?

I suddenly realize how badly I want a fic that delves into the Avengers happening about 10 days after Steve wakes up.
Like just showing him barely even figuring out the world and BAM time to fight, which is something he sort of knows how to do, but he's still so off balance...
that would be so good.

Me too! I can't think of ANY I have bookmarked that focuses on that. And I can only think of one I got bookmarked that mentions it at all.

It would also be super delicious angst, because you'd see how much nobody else is even acknowledging or factoring that in, or really giving him much support or anything. And Steve, of course, will barrel on and save the world because that's what he does.

I fucking love Steve whump. There isn't enough, damn it.

Bucky's "death" occurred not that long before Steve went down too. Bucky "died" in 1945 and Steve went down on May 4th of that year so, at best, he had a few months to adjust to his best friend's death.

Steve wakes up April 17th 2012 and the Battle of New york occurs May 4th.

That's not much time to deal with so much shit.

Do you know when Bucky disappeared? I'm guessing it was either January or February given the snow. But this also occurred in the Alps, so it could have happened later I suppose.

I can't figure it out. :C I thought I had a post about it but can't seem to find it. I know he died the same day Zola was captured (I think).

That much snow in that part of the world - yeah, December - February. Unlikely to be much later.

ayrt

Hmm, I saw First Avenger before The Avengers, so I guess I already knew what Steve was normally like, so the contrast in his behavior between the two movies made me feel more sympathetic to him, not less, because it was like "wow, that's how badly affected he was?"
