Re: Character favoritism?

Old fandom and old rant, but since I've been rereading fic lately, I'm gonna say the weird reaction Ezra and Vin get in M7. Especially Ezra. I mean, he's my favourite character, because the conman and gambler character will get me every time, but there is a truly stunning amount of fic where people misunderstand Ezra's actions, ostracize/beat the shit out of him, realise their mistake and grovel afterwards until everything is peachy again. Which ... aside from doing very weird/horrible things to all the other characters (reverse!racist Nathan really bugs me), also occasionally strays all the way out of h/c and into portraying what looks like honestly abusive relationships that are apparently swept back under the rug at the end of every fic. Seriously. If one character is going to repeatedly get the snot kicked out of him for sneezing wrong around the rest of them, the mystic bond of seven men and destiny can go hang itself, I'd tell him to get the hell out of dodge already.

I know old-school h/c can get a bit over the top, and M7 in particular seems to be very prone to that, but turning all the other characters temporarily rage-roid/evil so they can beat on one poor misunderstood character and then all make up again at the end of the fic with a little preaching about learning to trust and no repercussions for the previous gross violations of said trust is NOT the way to do it.

Oh man, you should read this awesome thread: http://epic-rants.livejournal.com/38734.html

This happens in more fics than just M7 though. Just not usually to that extent of ganging-up.

Okay, apparently I'm not the only one noticing the trend. What they said, yes ;)

And yeah, I remember coming across it in other fandoms as well, I've just been binge-reading M7 fic for the past week or so and it's really apparent right now. Heh. Was it a 90s fic trend or something? A lot of the non-m7 fics I remember most vividly were also in 90s fandoms. Or did I just read a lot of fic for 90s fandoms that had the tendency?

I really have no idea. I think maybe the '90s had more ensemble shows, so it was easier to say, have all the characters conspire together to beat up on the woobie, or have half of them side with the woobie and half of them against him, or have only one of the ensemble support him, or something. Or maybe it's just that fans collectively came up with this idea, and then the practice fell out of style due to all the criticism. Or something. It's kind of entertaining to read those fics though, I always wonder what was going through the writer's mind when she wrote it.
