I like that he's evolved from being the archetypal jerkass with anger issues in JL International to a more rounded, three-dimensional character with flaws (big ones) but a sense of bravado that's absent in most superheroes, and that bravado is a bit more subdued than it is in similar characters. He's an all-around tough guy who genuinely cares about his friends and colleagues, believes in what he's doing (and likes it too) he has some surprising soft spots. And he's not afraid to speak his mind to the big guys like Batman and Superman, even if he does get a punch in the face for it sometimes.

Also he's funny.
