There is no controversy watching LP's to see what a game is about before you decide if you want to play it. The controversy is more that lots of people who prefer LP over actual gaming don't seem to get that for some games there is no "one single story" and there are many different variations of scenes, dialogue and outcome based on who you talk to and when you talk to them, what your decisions are during the game etc etc. And from watching a LP you will never get the thrill of being involved and making 'the right' decisions and choosing what action to take next.

Maybe peoplee trust LPers to choose well and show an interesting outcome.

Doesn't quite have the same feel as doing it yourself.

Not that there's anything wrong with not wanting to do something yourself. For some people, though, there is that need to actually do it, and watching just can't compare to doing, even if the person you're watching is the best ever.
