I see a woman with a truly bizarre hairdo wearing a strapless dress and some kind of arm-garter things. While I don't think the outfit works at all on her, or possibly on anyone, I'm not sure what the problem is here.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Looks like she may have some five-o'clock shadowing on her chin, so I'm guessing it is transphobic jokes.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
IS that's the case, that's pretty weird for Laika. I thought they weird doing so well with having a gay character in Paranorman.

SPOILERS BTW

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"She" isn't trans. She is the villain of the story, a dude, who was obsessed with becoming a 'white hat' and getting to eat cheese with the rich people. He uses the female persona to scare the rich people into thinking the box trolls are evil. No one really listens to his male self, but all the guys in the movie love him when he's dressed up as the woman. (It's implied there might have been sex involved-One of the married rich guys says "I regret so much" when he mocks him with the woman voice he does)

So it's not that he identifies with being a woman, he's scamming people so he can become rich.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh great, we've got both sides of it. Transpeople are predatory fakes and non-cisfemales are disgusting and must make "real" men sick.

Why just offend in one way when with a little effort you can hit all of the offensive views. Yay. :¬(

You don't need a trans character to have transphobia.

Re: SPOILERS BTW

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
1.The joke was that the ugly, dirty, greasy haired, smelly guy with missing teeth was actually the 'hot cheese like lady' the rich guys became infatuated with. He's not a stand in for trans. He was using it to spread propaganda.

2.Laika is pro LGBTQ. One of their owners is a gay man himself. If you think they'd randomly make an anti-trans movie, then you're wildly off base.

3.The movie is full of British humor stuff, including Monty Python refs. This isn't anti-trans, it's a trope.

Re: SPOILERS BTW

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Being a "trope" doesn't magically excuse it. Blackface was a trope. Wifebeating jokes were a trope. And as someone said above, being gay doesn't make it impossible to be transphobic. I'm sure the intention wasn't lol let's hurt trans people, but the whole "grossed out by the 'trap' " joke is something that's been repeatedly talked about as harmful. It's nothing new, but talking about it is still important.

Re: SPOILERS BTW

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
You're more than welcome to become upset with a guy dressing in drag to spread propaganda, but don't call him 'trans' when he isn't.

Re: SPOILERS BTW

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt

It genuinely doesn't matter whether or not the character (or any character in a similar scenario) is trans! This still reinforces harmful beliefs about trans people because cis people at large can't differentiate between trans women and men in drag. It's all the same to them and so it shouldn't be treated as a separate issue at all.

Re: SPOILERS BTW

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
People have already explained why thinking this movie is transphobic is incorrect.

Re: SPOILERS BTW

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, you are just trolling now. Because no one could be so dumb as to keep asserting that.

ummm it "literally doesn't matter" if a character is trans when discussing whether the treatment of said character is transphobic? What? Can you be homophobic toward a straight person? Words have meanings.

Re: SPOILERS BTW

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
If most people actually knew the difference between a trans woman and a crossdresser or drag queen it maybe could matter, but generally, they don't. So it doesn't.

Also, if someone gets called a homophobic slur because they're acting/appear a way people parse as non-straight, that's still an action fueled by homophobia. Coding someone villainous with flamboyant gay characteristics still stigmatizes those characteristics even if the character is technically straight. (see grausam's comment further down re: disney villains) So it's still a problem no matter what.

example: most drag queens aren't transgender but they have transphobic slurs tossed at them constantly. transgender people don't have to be directly involved for transphobia to be present in a situation.

Can you be homophobic toward a straight person?

Absolutely. Never heard of a guy being called a "fag" for happening to be effeminate? It's still a homophobic slur and demonstrates a homophobic attitude in the person using the word, even if the guy happened to be straight in the end.

Re: SPOILERS BTW

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, the 'regret' guy is framed as a huge asshole. He's actively cheating on his wife with this woman. He makes a comment about spending money that was supposed to go to building a children's hospital on a huge wheel of cheese, ffs.

Re: SPOILERS BTW

1. the joke is that an ugly man passed as a women and ewww, "she" has actually a penis. Do you think it would have mattered to the rich people in character, if that character actually identified as a women? would they magically accept her? this plot line is not different from a transphobic stereotype except for the character's identity. It supports the reaction of disgust after finding out the "real" gender of the character.

somebody who doesn't want to be transphobic will just see the reveal of a villian, but someone who didn't examine their attitude, or is transphobic, won't make a difference between revealing a cis-mans disguise and a trans-women's presentation.

and just because 2&3 they're not intending to be offensive, doesn't mean they're not spreading the same tropes which are hurtful in the wider scheme of things?
We're not magically safe through our intention alone, yknow.

Re: SPOILERS BTW

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
1. The man wasn't making a joke about him being a 'ew man with a penis'. He was saying he regretted so much because the woman was actually a disgusting man he hated.

2. The man in question is an awful person. The white hats are shown to be horrible people, especially the commenter. He used money for a child's hospital to buy a wheel of cheese, didn't care that his daughter was in danger, and only worried about the trolls when Snatcher lied about them wanting cheese.

3. Nothing about him is trans. At all. The woman persona was just a disguise and nothing more.

"Nothing about him is trans. At all. The woman persona was just a disguise and nothing more."

Please listen to what is being said here because it's been reiterated SO MANY times: the majority of people already see trans peoples' presentation as a disguise! It doesn't matter if there is anything trans about him, because that's how the public sees trans women anyways! That's why use of this trope is so inherently harmful! When you present an audience with a man who dresses as a woman to trick people, you reinforce their belief that trans women dress as women to trick people! It's that simple!

the majority of people already see trans peoples' presentation as a disguise</>

Source? Because I'm pretty sure most transphobic bigots see transsexuals as people who are not right in the head and are mentally defective, not as people playing a game of pretend.

i take it youre the same anon who mentioned the lgbt thing upthread, but i need to inform you that members of the lgbt community can still be homophobic, transphobic, misogynist, etc. the gay male community in particular is notorious for being very transphobic. someone involved in this media being gay does not, in any way, exempt them from being transphobic or doing/saying transphobic things. i have nothing else to say on this subject but you cannot assume your second point holds any water, because it doesn't. and for that matter, tropes can be transphobic.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)

The character is a man. identifies as a man. Stuff like that.

What I've seen most people up in arms about is another character going, "I regret everything" when that's revealed.
