It was a weird plot-point (or at least too British for me), so while the SJWs may have a bit of a point, the post I saw about it was hilarious in its own right. Some cis girl going all mother Theresa wannabe and saying that she started crying for all the trans girls in the theater. Sheesh.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd like to know trans people's thoughts on this, because I suspect this is another case of SJWs being offended on behalf of a group who isn't offended by the character.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm trans and I'm sick of yet another round of "lets laugh at a bloke in a dress" because even if it is just drag, it still ends up with it being another brickbat to be hurled at me by bigots who think that trans=drag. I'd be more than happy to have every "man in a frock" joke and act put on hold for a decade or so until the general public can learn to differentiate the two. So if the SJWs want to raise hell, and make this movie an example of a style of humour that needs to die, then that is fine with me. I've had literal bricks thrown at me by bastard bigots who were chanting punch lines from drag-show jokes. Its just a laugh to you, but it is another piece of crap to make my day harder for me.

Hi. I'm the anon who keeps talking about cis people not being able to understand the difference between trans women and male crossdressers. I'm a trans woman. It's offensive and I'm fucking sick of shit like this everywhere -- and I do mean everywhere. The man in a dress gag (or just straight up jokes about trans women) feels completely unavoidable in pop culture (I haven't seen a single comedy show on tv that avoids it) and I'm incredibly sick of people constantly relating my identity to the most recent iteration of it. I've been lucky enough to avoid violence fueled by it, but I think the anon above me makes it pretty clear what an issue it is. This shit needs to die.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
So you're trans, that explains a lot. Now I can understand why are you seeing a transphobic agenda here. You feel personally attacked by this movie and are over reacting and projecting your fears and painful experiences into the character.

I'll proceed to ignore your comments then as you can't be objective regarding this topic (not your fault, I know), but feel free to vent as much as you need.

DA

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see why you should ignore this person because they have personal experience with this. TBH they have an understandable reason to feel bothered by this.

NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
So when no trans person speaks out, you say it is SJWs creating a fuss with no backing. If a trans person speaks up as you asked them to it is because they are too close and not seeing things clearly. Well I see something clearly. You're a bigoted cunt.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-13 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I like how people here are like I'm sure if a real transperson saw this they'd get tired off all these cis people being offended on their behalf, but the second one actually comments they're too invested to objective.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-13 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
lol guess I should mention I'm also a nayrt

(Anonymous) 2014-10-13 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, its like "well I bet a black person wouldn't really be offended by a minstrels show". Black people: "yes we fucking are". "Well you are obviously just oversensitive about it and are taking offense for nothing". Anything to avoid admitting to being caught being a phobe.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-13 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Not the same. At all.

Ministrels shows are making fun of black people, so of course a black person's opinion and feelings are the most important thing.

In this case is trans people commenting on a character that crossdresses (and the movie doesn't even make fun of crossdressing, it just has a crossdressing character). Trans =/= crossdressers.

Completely different issues here. and you know it. Stop pretending that they are the same.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-13 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
da
A point that has been made REPEATEDLY in this secret's comments is that a lot of people don't know the difference, so when crossdressers are the butt of a joke, transmen and transwomen get caught in the backdraft. And to say the film isn't making fun of crossdressers...Uh, that's the joke. He's a crossdresser. People are supposed to laugh when it's revealed. Goodness gracious, it looks like you're the one who needs to step back.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-13 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
So, you honestly believe that there's not a ton of people out there who hear about a transwoman and their brain translates that to "a guy wearing a dress?"

Either you live in an incredibly open and accepting place, or your have kevlar-coated trust in the willingness of people to educate themselves about something when they can just laugh at it.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-13 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the guy who asked that question but not the same you're replying too. Just saying.

I agree with some of the other anons that there's nothing offensive about that cross dressing character but I wanted to know if trans people were personally offended by it.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-13 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I'm trans. Yes, it is inherently offensive. Yes, crossdressing played for laugh is always offensive. Yes, bigots use crossdressing jokes to abuse trans, because, yes, people don't discern the difference between trans*, drag, crossdressing, or outright deceit.

Happy now?

(Anonymous) 2014-10-13 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
You gotta admit, it's understandable that people would assume you're the same person.

Also
"Even though I asked for the opinions of trans people, I'm going agree with the cis people in this thread and tell you you're wrong."
Charming.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-13 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
"This is just cis SJWs getting offended for a group that isn't actually offended in the first place!" "Oh, you're trans? Well then can't be objective so I'll just ignore you."

You have no idea how hard I'm laughing right now. Whatever pal, whatever. Have a good day.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-13 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Different anons! Don't assume that every anonymous comment is posted by the same person.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-13 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
And yet cis people get so mad when we say they can't be objective or don't understand.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-13 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
No, we don't. How about stopping with the generalisations?

.....seriously? what even is this comment.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-13 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
you're a condescending prick who is also in no sense "objective," and you sound like the assholes who thought a gay judge in california shouldn't be able to decide the constitutionality of a gay marriage ban because he's inherently "biased." (protip: you're obviously biased too)
