While I see issues with the whole "killing mom off, i.e. fridging her" thing, I don't understand why that's worse in regards to Neelix's character flaws. If a child were orphaned on board a lost starship, you'd need a caregiver. Unless you're talking about how mom was shoved off to the side, but that's not really a reflection of Neelix's character but poor writing. He wasn't creeping on her in their scenes together.

I do think that should the Ensign really have died, Naomi would have been *realistically* placed with someone on board who was already a parent/had kids with them (although I recall there being very, very few children on board Voyager, unlike the Enterprise, as it was a different class ship with a different, shorter mission). But since TV writing is going to put any orphan with an established character for plot reasons, it might as well be Neelix. Except Tuvok, I don't recall any of the main characters having children back home. And certainly they all were busy, being command staff.

Naomi was the first baby born aboard Voyager, there were no others until the Borg children later on. None of the main cast except Tuvok had kids, you're right. Naomi belonged to 'all of them' - in the words of Janeway.
