I think movies probably do have it the worst in this respect, because of the short runtime. In a long-running tv series or a novel you're almost bound to get some characterization for everyone, the love interest included, whereas films are more like short stories - everything that isn't necessary get cut, and so many people consider characterizing the token love interest as anything other than a set of boobs superfluous.
