There definitely are female characters who seem almost thrown into a movie last minute to give the male lead a romantic interest. I say movies because that's the medium where I think I started to notice it first. I feel bad for actresses who probably got into this line of work because they're passionate about acting, but then they're given roles that don't have much going for them. That being said, there are female characters out there who are simultaneously in a romantic plot and have other interests driving them. You should start a rec thread in the GC, OP.

I think movies probably do have it the worst in this respect, because of the short runtime. In a long-running tv series or a novel you're almost bound to get some characterization for everyone, the love interest included, whereas films are more like short stories - everything that isn't necessary get cut, and so many people consider characterizing the token love interest as anything other than a set of boobs superfluous.

I think you're right. Movies do have less time to decently develop a character (or multiple characters) that it's easier to just throw in generic trope characters to fill out your cast.
