Not OP, but I'm pretty much in the same boat as far as issues go, except I don't hate cardboard cut out love interests. I find them annoying and wish their writers would put a little more thought into them. The "clueless loser without a girlfriend gets called to adventure, saves the world or a significant chunk thereof, and wins the affections of a hot pair of boobs" storyline still shows up way too often.

I doubt I'd enjoy a gender flipped variant any more though. It's lazy storytelling either way. Characters who take up the most screen time/spend a lot of time with the main character should get as much development as the protagonist, but so often all they are is ciphers. Comic relief side kicks, brainless moods, and square jawed action heroes are just as annoying. Show us why the protagonist gives a fuck instead of just labeling her "the girlfriend."
