Hey, I understand - some voices are just great and others...not so much. That being said,n that's our personal preference and not the podcast's fault. Other people might like her.

I had to give up on several podcasts because the voices annoy me. And I have listened to several podcasts that don't have topics that are super interesting to me because the voices are nice.

Oh God, I feel you. Both This American Life and Planet Money are two of my favorite podcasts and they both have people who's voices I find so grating that they are un-listenable to me. I feel terrible about it because they're great at their jobs and they can't help their voices, but what are you gonna do?

i felt this way about Anna Sussman from Snap Judgment but tbh after a while i got kind of endeared to it.

I couldn't watch this one home reno show (they're a guilty pleasure) because I couldn't stand the host's voice, so I get it.

Is it Nicole Curtis from Rehab Addict?

I once dropped a class because I didn't like the way the professor was teaching it (it was an elective so I just signed up for another course). Her voice and her tone also grated on me for some reason, and it was part of the reason why I decided to drop it. I just didn't want to listen to her 3 hours a week.

I completely understand you. A bad voice can just ruin a podcast. Even a worthwhile one. While a good voice can save a boring podcast.

Apropo of dick all:

That is one VERY cute mouse.

I want that mouse. (Also, I understand. I always feel terrible when someone's voice grates on me because of course they can't help what they sound like and it's a silly thing to be irritated by, but it happens. Usually it's something I can overcome, though. Sometimes you just need to get used to it, and sometimes no matter what you won't care for the person's voice.)
cloud_riven: Bill from Pokemon side-eying to the left! Judging you! (*animu sweatdrop*)

I remember when slash report had a bunch hosted by guests (submissions, really), and I was really excited for several topics outside of the main casts range. But then it turns out most of these people sound terrible on a microphone. If there were a variation of ugly anon, they would have their own ugly voice anon (who I would shamefully agree with at times).

Does she have a vocal fry? (Think Kim Kardashian or Kesha.) Because oh my GOD, do I hate the sound of a vocal fry.

That's where they tend to tilt their tones lower at the end of sentences or completed thoughts, right? For some reason, I've heard an almost dispropriate number of nerd girls speak that way. I don't mind it hearing it, but it's just bizarre to me.

I think a fry is more of that sort of buzzy sound, almost like a double timbre or flange? (I have no idea if I'm describing this right)

(Anonymous) 2014-10-14 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
It's a downward tone and dragging out the end of words, ending in a sizzle, yeah. The girls who do it also tend to be a little nasal-y, too, but the reason why I don't like it is because they're forcing their voices to go to an uncomfortable spot in their throat.

It's pretty common among female 20-30somethings, regardless. I don't have it (too much theater) and most of my friends don't have it, but I know pleeeenty of people who speak that way.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-14 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
there are people I know who sound like they need to cough all the time or have a constant throat infection and it makes me want to strangle them

Number one reason I just can't listen to podfic. Disregarding the awkwardness, there are a lot of voices I can't stand listening to and often, when the voices are okay, the recording quality sucks.

There are one or two narrators on the NoSleep podcast I really can't listen to either and sadly, one of them reads a lot of stories, so I often end up skipping a lot of tales. It's what's holding me back from buying more than the one season pass I bought in the past.

I feel this way about voices where you can hear the 'wetness' in the voice, for a lack of a better word. Hearing a person swallow, open their mouth, very voice-y voices, that are obviously coming from a very organic being.

mrcreepypasta, who I enjoy - I can only listen to a few of his videos at a time, and depending on how he sounds in that video, sometimes I have to shut it off completely.
