I expect it's a generational thing. I'm a 60s kid and those books were a part of my childhood too. Totally normal thing. We've become a nation of whimps. All that 'thinking of the children', don't you know.

I'm not sure why my contemporaries are so risk adverse. And I don't know why they think that their kids need to be wrapped in cotton. But they are and they have. And I feel like I need to apologize on behalf of my generation for what they have done by meaning well.

There are things out there that are genuinely scary. These books aren't it.

My mom didn't personally like them and would prefer I didn't read them, but she wasn't going to discourage me from reading.

I think people just like talking about childhood things being secretly horrible.
