America has an idealized, romanticized, view of what childhood should be. It's seen as a state of wholesome innocence, all evidence presented to the contrary.

Saying that his books are dark or macabre isn't necessarily a criticism, though.

That's a good point. I think I was more into dark stuff as a kid than I am now.
