Also an American, and they were a normal part of my childhood. It could be an age thing, though. I'm 40, firmly Gen X. If you're younger, maybe they fell out of fashion and that's what you're noticing.

I'm 25 and they were considered normal and quite good when I was a kid, even at my super-religious school.

I think it's a generational thing. I'm Canadian, but I've noticed a distinct move towards sanitizing kids' entertainment from when I was growing up to now.
