I can't vouch for the books, but the movie "The Witches" scared my second cousin to such a degree that her parents had to take her to therapy (she was convinced all old ladies were witches).

So the therapist was there to lull her back into that false sense of security? Good, good, mwahahahahahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAH, all according to the prophecy and plan!

Erm, I mean, so the therapist was able to put her mind at ease and help her remember that old people are only there to help her. And that sometimes an old lady needs help in cleaning the back of her oven...

Never saw the movie, but my teacher read the book to us in 4th grade (she also read one about the kid making the medicine and the grandma grew/shrank/eventually died I think?) and I don't recall it being scary at all.

Actually, I recall thinking it was kind of ridiculous that this teacher read it to us since she was really, really mean and kids called her a witch and a bitch behind her back. I remember I wondered if she was aware and trying to laugh at us by reading the book or if she just really liked Dahl.
