The original series was progressive. The remake was done by Star Wars fans who really, really, REALLY wanted to do Star Wars but accepted Star Trek because, meh, it's close enough. I mean, look how quick Abrams jumped ship the moment he got a chance to do Star Wars. Who jumps a successful franchise when the ship is still afloat? Someone who doesn't actually care about it.

Don't feel so bad. Hopefully, the new Star Trek film will be a vast improvement over the last one.

Nah, one of the main culprits jumped back off Power Rangers reboot (to the relief of PR fans) and back onto Trek to keep on fucking it up. Even Michael Bay would be better than the current team.

Orci's no longer attached to the PR reboot?

Maybe the rule is going to become "watch every third movie" rather than "skip the odd-numbered movies." (Of course the even/odd rule broke down a bit as the original movie franchise transitioned into The Next Generation.)

(Anonymous) 2014-10-14 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
The rule works perfectly still

as long as you remember the Galaxy Quest modification

True, but even with that rule, Wrath of Khan is the only "classic" to come out of the franchise, and STID really fell short in borrowing from that conflict, and did so in a way that, at least to me, really misunderstood what the characters and conflicts were about.

Hey, Undiscovered Country is as much a classic as Khan. I'll agree that those are the only two classics though. I know people say Plummer is a weak villain, but I disagree, he is a great red herring to hide that there is no central villain nor does their need to be. The villain in Undiscovered Country was the fear of change in everyone's heart.

I do have TMP as a guilty pleasure as sort of the ultimate 70s mood piece; and backdoor pilot for Disco McCoy: Doctor on the Dancefloor, which in my mind ran for 6 seasons of groovy space doctorin' and dancin'!

Hello, I love you for reading my mind. <3

Personally, The Voyage Home was always my favorite. Yes, Wrath of Khan was objectively awesome. But Voyage Home will always hold the most special place in my heart for all Star Trek movies.

Hey! What about First Contact?!

(Anonymous) 2014-10-15 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
FC was okay. I mean not great, the best of any of the non-TOS movies, but just okay.

Excuse you. The Voyage Home is a classic.

Its a fun movie. As time-travel comedies go it is a good one. However, it is out of place in terms of the arc (note the level of angst from Kirk in Undiscovered Country compared to Voyage Home when it comes to the loss of his son) and in basically a pacing episode. You know how in the tv series you'd get a string of dark episodes and just when the audience is about to collectively slit their wrists from the grimness, they'd chuck in a light hearted comedy episode that doesn't really do anything except lighten the mood to help pace it? Well that is TVH. There are no deep themes in it ("save the whales" doesn't count) and no deep performances. Just a fun runaround. Not that fun runarounds are bad, hell DC Entertainment could use a couple, but they are never "great" movies, even if they are great movies to watch.

It's a fun movie but it's not really very Star Trek. V has more things I like about TOS than IV does. (Heresy!)
