Gonna agree with this. But he wanted to play up the 'he's old and not 11. HOW IS SHE GONNA HANDLE THIS?' angle. Ugh.

Apart from the initial shock, I don't think the fact that he's older has much of an impact on their relationship at all. The fact that he's being a jerk, yes.
