Gimore Girls maybe (with Lorelai and her mother, not Rory and Lorelai). I don't know if I would call Emily and Lorelai's relationship super shitty, but it definitely had a lot of issues and Lorelai's relationship with her parents was so strained that she lived in varying degrees of poverty after her daughter was born because she didn't like the idea of asking them for help even though her parents were hella rich.

In Desperate Houswives, Bree also has a pretty of messed up relationship with her children even though she ultimately loves them

It's only in small amounts, but The Diviners by Libba Bray has several moments that indicate Evie and her mother have an extremely fucked-up dynamic. It's only the first book in the series though, so it remains to be seen if there'll be more.

But speaking of Libba Bray, Beauty Queens has quite a few fucked up Moms and daughters, which is actually kind of expected in a book about Beauty Pageant contestants.

It's cause fiction hates the idea of adoptive families working.

The part that annoys me is that trope where only the ~real mother~ can love the child fully or whatever. Like, there are all these stepmothers or adoptive mothers that are somehow less legit than the birthmother. As someone who was adopted and also has a stepmother, that is some bullshit.

Aeryn Sun and her mother Xhalax Sun on Farscape. Kira Nerys and her mother Kira Meru, sort of, on DS9. Buffy and Joyce's relationship wasn't bad, but it was complex, and Joyce wasn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination. Ummm... Deanna and Lwaxana Troi -- more Trek here than I was expecting. Kara Thrace and her mother whose name I can't remember on BSG. Sydney Bristow and her mother Irina Derevko (Alias) had a complex relationship, but again, Irina was not a magically good mother. Angela Petrelli didn't have any daughters, but she was manipulative as hell to her sons and granddaughter.

Huh, now you have me really thinking about it. And yeah, damn... most writers do not handle mothers very well. OITNB makes sense, the show is woman-centric and therefore is going to tackle female relationships a lot more realistically, including strained relationships with mothers. But other series and movies and books? The mother is either a saint, or the bad mother is not genetically related, or the mother is dead. Obviously there ARE bad and alive bio-moms out there in stories but yeah it's kinda hard to find.

Actually

I feel ya' OP
A writing project I'm working on now features a female supporting character whose backstory includes a mother who was a non-functioning alcoholic and eventually committed suicide. It essentially forced her to raise her younger siblings and caused her to develop some long term emotional problems.

Katniss from the Hunger Games had a pretty difficult relationship with her mother. It got a little better as the series went on, but it was never fully functional

Monica and Judy in Friends. Cora and Regina in Ouat. Tara and Lettie Mae in True Blood. Betty and Sally in Mad Men...But I agree that it's easier to find bad father/child relationships in fiction.

I feel spoiled now.

I hate seeing bad relationships with moms in fiction, mostly because I have no concept of a bad relationship with one's mother. I've had an overall good relationship with my mother. Most of the problems have been due to my own neurochemical deficiencies, and even at age 26, her hugs make me feel better. With all the people not as blessed as I am, I cherish our relationship even more.

More examples!

-- Meredith and her mom Ellis on Grey's Anatomy is a GREAT example of this. Something I like about it is that the WAY it's fucked up is a trope that is very regular for messy father/daughter relationships -- workaholic parent is distant and cold, makes child feel the only way to earn their love/respect is success -- but not as usually seen for mother/daughter. Ellis is anything but the regular saintly motherly figure (while also feeling very human, not Total Monster).

-- Alias. Less everyday kind of bad relationship, but Sydney's complex relationship to her mom is one of the best things about this show.

-- Victoria Greyson and Charlotte on Revenge. Also Emily and her mom. Basically every parent child relationship on this show is a shitshow, though. Actually... just basically every relationship, period.

I feel like there's quite a bit of bad mother/child relationships in japanese media (in Soul Eater, Fruits Basket, Umineko, Kingdom, Kill la Kill, JJBA, Narutaru, Skip Beat, Piece, Life, Kare Kano, Zankyou no Terror, Blue Exorcist, Noein, Oyasumi Punpun, Ristorante Paradiso...)
Though there's of course probably more of the "naturally wonderful with children mother".

I totally agree that the evil step-mother trop is annoying and I'd want complex mother/daughters relationship, wether bad or good (because the ones with holy good mothers are often superficial I think)

I agree! With a small tweak, Daya's mom could easily be my mom and it's weirdly refreshing to see that portrayed. Nikki's relationship with her mom is a little more cliche, but they nailed her reaction to her ("I always miss you until you're here."), so it doesn't bug me much.

The OC, surprisingly had two complicated/borderline abusive mother daughter relationships.

Marissa and Jullie Copper - throughout the series.
In season 4 - we discover that Taylor and her mom have an emotionally abusive relationship.

If you're into diverse representations of not perfect motherhood, you should check out The Killing. It's really interesting in how it portrays mothers who try and just fail at being maternal.

ever seen 'Mom'?

The CBS sitcom Mom is supposed to be about this, but they have toned it down a lot.

I hated Debbie Novotny of QaF US so much, because for her "She's his mother!" or "I'm his mother!" was the argument to end all arguments. Everything about a relationship was explained with that, and for her it was perfectly valid. Having grown up with an abusive mother, characters like her still make me furious.

The British cop show "Scott & Bailey" does an amazing job of showcasing various kinds of relationships among women (the three principal leads are all women) and Rachel Bailey has a truly awful mother. The mother only shows up in S3, but we hear about her before that and we also get to see how Rachel's sister deals with the situation differently.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-17 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd have to watch Jane of Lantern Hill again to find out if Robin's relationship to her mother (Jane's grandmother) is as dysfunctional as it is in the book. In the book, Jane's grandmother controls Robin with guilt and has basically squashed every bit of assertiveness out of her; she's clearly never quite forgiven Robin for loving Jane's father (or Jane, either).
