Can we have a new fail!bar category please; unreadable. Secret number six ought to be flung down there for that.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-16 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, calm yourself, I agree it's difficult to read but we don't need a category specifically for that. It's just tough to read. Just don't read it if you don't want to read it.

I think there should be some serious thought about doing it. There have been a lot of secrets of late that are unreadable fonts, tiny fonts, stuff merging into backgrounds. Even some of the stuff that isn't totally unreadable has been problematic, especially for people with vision problems. Its no fun for the casual reader either I might add. If the presence of an "unreadable" failbar category makes submitters think twice about their font and coloring choices then it might be worth it.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-16 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! That's not even close to the most unreadable secret I've seen here.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-16 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
That's the problem :¬(

I think AYRT's point is, that where do we draw the line? Some people can read this secret but no other, so what counts as Unreadable?

Also, the logical response to "I can't read this" should not be "So let's hide it away somewhere so that it's unreadability is increased" Yanno?

(Anonymous) 2014-10-16 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
The unreadability of that one secret is increased, but the knock on is that secret authors start to raise their game and increase the readability of many more secrets across the board. That means in general, more people can start to interact.

Seems rather mean spirited, don't you think? Can't read it? Why not just scroll past it? Why try to make it harder for the people who can read it?

(Anonymous) 2014-10-16 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, why ask for a minor change that would mean more people could read the secrets in the long run. I mean, if someone has vision problems, that is their fucking shit luck mate, innit.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-16 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not really a minor change.

I mean, where are the bright line distinctions between what is and is not readable?

If someone has vision problems, then they can't read the secret, then what benefit would they be given by removing something that they can't even see? Seems to me the only people who would lose out would be the people who CAN read it, but would have to go to the fail bar to do so. nahwutmsayin?

The problem is that it's almost impossible for that sort of thing to be standardized. I can read secret #6 just fine, and perhaps case can, as well. If "unreadable" became a failbar category, then what's "unreadable" would by necessity be determined by case, and he might be able to read secrets that others can't or be unable to read secrets that others can.

And I think that's generally the case, since he has to be able to read the texts of all secrets in order for them to qualify as secrets. And he frequently posts secrets that many others have a hard time reading. So in the end, very little would change.

If Case couldn't read something, and he couldn't find anyone else who was able to read it, it'd be failbar'd anyway, but that's not a common occurrence (I don't think?).

(Anonymous) 2014-10-16 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't have any trouble reading it. The contrast could have been a bit better, but it seemed okay.

[personal profile] the_missing_y 2014-10-16 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. Now me personally, I read secret 5 with the changing colour of the text and my brain went "Nope"
Got through it, but it was much slower going that it aught to have been. Still I wouldn't say it's a reason to ditch it.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-17 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
maybe you should get a vision test done? You may be colorblind or something, the secret is not difficult to read.

Srs question: Would colorblind affect seeing shades of blues? My vision is deteriorating with colorblindness (I couldn't read the secret even when I zoomed the image size up) but I thought it was only for greens and reds????

(Anonymous) 2014-10-18 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
While it's not as commonly discussed as red/green, blue colorblindness is something that's been documented. (And given that blue is a primary color when it comes to light, it kind of makes sense that there'd be potential for color blindness to occur with those particular light wavelengths.) http://www.webmd.com/eye-health/tc/color-blindness-topic-overview

If only transcriptanon was still around.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-17 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
They were worse than useless, unless the transcript was the first comment it was pointless. Submitters should include a transcript to be posted next-the-picture, that would actually be helpful.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-17 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Gonna disagree. Even if they were a bit late sometimes, they were pretty helpful.

I agree that "unreadable" could be a useful failbar category, but secret 6 was definitely not unreadable to me.

I could see it if you had weird lighting I guess or issues with colors. But I've seen far, FAR worse.

DA

it is a pain to read on mobile. It's readable, but not worth the effort.

So use your thumb and scroll on by. Problem solved!

I like that they're not failbarred, because then people can make fun of the OP's lack of secret-making skills.

Besides, if you're straining your eyes to read a secret, thereby working yourself towards a headache, that is so your own fault.
