Why the need to point out how long they've been doing it though?

Unless "SB! I've been doing this since I was 0.463 months old and I'm jealous of people who started last week who are already better than me because I can't handle the possibility that I'm just not that good" then making a big deal that they've been doing it for sooo long is pretty pretentious.

They're drawing a comparison. they've been drawing since they were so young they can hardly remember, and feel no jealousy over better artists (thus admitting there are people better than them), but then are confused by their jealousy over better writers, even though they also started young with that. It seems more wondering if the age they started had anything to do with it.

Still reads less like a secret and more like OP wanting a pat on the back.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-16 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
But who really cares? Does it somehow benefit you to believe that the OP is humblebragging? Does it hurt you if you believe the OP is sincere when s/he's actually humblebragging?

No. It doesn't. It's a fucking fandom secret which will never hurt anyone, ever.

So why not take it at face value? If they're NOT humblebragging, then accusing them of it will make them feel really shitty. If they ARE humblebragging, you calling them out on it probably doesn't make a damn difference to their behavior. Therefore, there is really no reason to not take it at face value unless you just like to be a dick.

Wow, something hit a nerve with you, huh?

As the person you're replying to: get a fucking life. The only reason it reads like that is because there is some weird culture imposed on artists, I've noticed, where if they have a speck of confidence, they aren't doing art right. It's something I've grown up with, something I've observed in all fandom places where if the artist doesn't act like they're "not that good" or they even mention how long they've been doing anything, then they're horrible people who deserve a verbal beatdown.

Agreed.

I see people complain about artists who call their artwork crap, but then when an artists acknowledges that they do have experience or skill, it's suddenly "omg so egotistical".

People are allowed to have some confidence for fucks sake.

Agreeing with this. Doing it from a young age =/= I'M SO AWESOME! ... all the secret-maker said is that they've been doing this for a long time. Nowhere did they say they were good. They might be, but they never said that. I've known people who have been drawing or writing since a young age that aren't that good (especially if they're STILL young - for all we know the OP is, like, 13)... I think people are being overly harsh here. Saying you've had a hobby your whole life isn't bragging. It's just a statement.
