19: Something about this secret made me feel warm and fuzzy. I have no idea who those characters are, but yes, you win an internet, OP.

40: I'm not sure what it makes you sound like, but I think it's a good thing. Progressive = good. Moralizing = massive amounts of fail. Oscar Wilde would beat those girls with an umbrella, and he's the best example of a victim of those rejecting, regressive attitudes I can think of.

To be fair to Oscar Wilde, he actually provoked that prosecution and was generally pushing his luck at the time by being a smartass. Not saying he deserved it, but there's actually some evidence that the 20th century was less kind to homosexuals than the 19th. And that it's generally unfair to pretend he was a helpless martyr.

Oh, no, you misunderstand me. Oscar Wilde certainly wasn't a helpless martyr; I think that's why he makes such a charming example. He brought a good deal of it on himself (or, well, all of it, I suppose, seeing as he started it with the law suit over the libel-that-wasn't), but I think that the sort of people in 19 would have tried to defend him anyway, right down to the prostitutes I would argue that the nineteenth century did have the death penalty for homosexuals (at least for a substantial part of it in England), but I'm not sure how well that was enforced.

Pretty sure it was never enforced by the second half of the 19th century. There were also fewer arrests made in the 19th century than in the 20th, when they got more fond of raiding gay clubs and bars, etc.
