35. I'm a lot like you, but I don't really have a problem with people who are writing explicitly in order to get better. Fandom's too big and varied for me to care about other people's motivations, unless they're doing something dumb like selling their fanfic to make money.

It is pretty rare to find shounen with a female protagonist. There's more stuff with awesome women in supporting roles, but sometimes you want something that's all about a woman (or women), not a guy.

I definitely second the Slayers rec (though it's not really a Shounen series, is it?). Lina Inverse is amazing.
